Get ready for some Winter Olympics action in alpine skiing!
At least we hope so.
High winds have postponed several skiing events during the first week in Pyeongchang, but organizers hope to get things under way with the women’s giant slalom and men’s downhill events on Thursday in South Korea (Wednesday night in the U.S.)
Scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. ET on Wednesday
Two events are ready to take to the mountain on Day 6. The women’s giant slalom and the men’s downhill. After several weather delays, American hopeful Mikaela Shiffrin is probably more than ready to compete in her first race of these Games. Viktoria Rebensberg of Germany and Tessa Worley of France could provide some tough competition for the American.
Schedule to begin at 10:10 p.m. ET on Wednesday
The USA plays its biggest rival, Canada, in what is very likely a preview of the gold-medal game. The Americans are coming off a 5-0 shutout of the Olympic Athletes from Russia. After that game, everyone said the controversy surrounding the goalie masks was not a distraction.
Scheduled to begin at 6:20 a.m. ET on Thursday
American Lowell Bailey won gold in the men’s 20K individual in the 2017 world championships. Bailey got off to a slow start in these Games and the USA has never won an Olympic medal in the sport. Could this be the day all that changes?
Scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday
Medals will be earned in the pairs competition, but the Americans are not in the hunt. Husband and wife Alexa Scimeca Knierim and Chris Knierim stand 14th, three places behind the solid North Korean team of Ryom Tae-Ok and Kim Ju Sik. Sun Weijing and Han Cong of China lead going into Thursday’s free skate after posting a score of 82.39.
Scheduled to begin at 6 a.m. ET on Thursday
Dutch star Sven Kramer seeks to add another gold in the men’s 10,000. He’s already won the 5,000 at these Games. Kramer, who won silver in the 10K in Sochi, has said his goal is to win three golds in Pyeongchang. He has the team pursuit and mass start coming up later in the Games.
