U.N. Security Council eyes new North Korea sanctions

The U.N. Security Council scheduled a vote Friday on proposed new sanctions against North Korea, including sharply lower limits on its refined oil imports  and a crackdown on the country’s shipping. The proposed sanctions are the Security Council’s response to North Korea’s test on Nov. 29 of its most powerful intercontinental ballistic missile yet, which the government said is capable of hitting anywhere on the U.S. mainland. It was North Korea’s 20th launch of a ballistic missile this year and added to fears that the North will soon have a nuclear arsenal that can viably target the U.S. mainland. The last sanctions resolution was adopted Sept. 11 in response to North Korea’s sixth and strongest nuclear test explosion eight days earlier.

Last day to share your thoughts on proposed national park fee hike

Public comment period ends Friday for the National Park Service’s possible entrance fee hike at some of the nation’s most popular landmarks. Earlier this year, the Trump administration proposed raising the entrance fee to $70 during peak season at many of the protected lands. The plan is intended to fund improvements for the parks’ old infrastructure, but some experts say the increase could drive away visitors.

Holiday air travel expected to peak

If you are heading to the airport, leave early. Friday is projected to be one of the busiest holiday air travel days, according to the Airlines for America trade group. (Dec. 21 and Dec. 26 are the other peak days). Airlines are expecting to see a record 51 million passengers for the holiday season, a 3.5% increase from the previous peak of 49.3 million last year. If you can, consider switching your flight to Dec. 24, Dec. 25 or Dec. 31, which are projected to be the lightest days of the holiday period, which runs through Jan. 4.
